Wild Workshops

Program Description

Each workshop features a wide variety of activities involving behind-the-scenes opportunities, hands-on activities, and live animal contact.

Behind the Scenes 
Dates:  April 18th 2020, June 13th 2020, November 14th, 2020

Time: 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Ages: Families with children ages 6 and up
This workshop is an exciting experience that gives you and your family a once-in-a-lifetime chance to go behind closed doors at the Buffalo Zoo! Meet zookeepers as we visit three exhibit areas to learn the daily routine of preparing animal diets, observing behavior, training and more.

Due to the unpredictability of animals, tour experiences may vary

Please be aware that we will be visiting confined zookeeper work areas with close proximity to wild animals. All participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a paying adult. Animal Artists

Date: February 8th, 2020

Time: 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Ages: Families (ages 6+)

The Buffalo Zoo is home to some amazing artists, who use their paws, trunks, or scaly skin to make beautiful works of art! This workshop is a special opportunity to learn more about our animal artists. You will discover how zookeepers use training techniques to develop an animal’s painting style, observe how zookeepers make paintings with animals from our Education Department, and be challenged to a zoo animal paw print matching game. You will even get a mini “painting” to take home!

Come Fly with Me

Date: May 9th, 2020

Time: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Ages: Families (ages 6+)

Do you love birds? So do we! In this exciting workshop, we will learn about our local feathered friends, meet a few birds of prey up close, dissect an owl pellet, and explore how you can attract birds to your neighborhood.

Life of a Zookeeper

Date: September 26th, 2020

Time: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Ages: Families (ages 6+)

In this workshop, we will see if you have what it takes to take care of zoo critters!  We will find out about the variety of animal diets that are prepared daily at the Zoo, learn about how our keepers keep our animals happy and healthy and even learn some great animal training techniques!

Beginner’s Photography

Date: October 10th, 2020

Time: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Ages: Teens and adults (ages 14+)

Learn how to find the proper lighting, angle, composition, and more with a local photographer. Take your nature photography to the next level! This beginner-level photography workshop requires each participant to bring a digital SLR camera.
