Program Description

Each workshop features a wide variety of activities involving behind-the-scenes opportunities, hands-on activities, and live animal contact.

Behind the Scenes 
Dates:  April 13th, 2019

June 8th, 2019

September 21st, 2019

Time: 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Ages: Families with children ages 6 and up
This workshop is an exciting experience that gives you and your family a once-in-a-lifetime chance to go behind closed doors at the Buffalo Zoo! Meet zookeepers as we visit three exhibit areas to learn the daily routine of preparing animal diets, observing behavior, training and more.

Please be aware that we will be visiting confined zookeeper work areas with close proximity to wild animals. All participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a paying adult. Woo at the Zoo

Date: February 9th, 2019

Time: 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Ages: Adults (ages 18+)

Did you know that zoo animals have their own dating service, similar to Tinder or Match? In this adults-only workshop, we will learn about how they celebrate Valentine’s Day in the animal kingdom, see how we find mates for zoo animals, and even make and deliver a special treat for one of our famous animal couples here at the zoo.

Beginner’s Photography

Date: May 4th, 2019

Time: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Ages: Teens and adults (ages 14+)

Learn how to find the proper lighting, angle, composition, and more with a local photographer. Take your nature photography to the next level! This beginner-level photography workshop requires each participant to bring a digital SLR camera.

Arctic Edge

Date: August 11th, 2019

Time: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Ages: Families (ages 6+)

Cool off this summer with a trip to the arctic…edge that is. We will take a closer look at arctic animals, experience their adaptations for ourselves, and get a closer look at some of our winter-loving animals.

You Can Be A Vet

Date: October 12th, 2019

Time: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Ages: Families (ages 6+)

Get ready to sharpen your observation skills! We will be taking an up-close and personal look at how the Zoo cares for over 150 different species of animals.  Hands-on activities will sharpen our investigative techniques that help our veterinary staff diagnose and treat Zoo animals.  We will have an opportunity to observe radiographs, use microscopes, and much more!

Meet the Dinosaurs

Date: November 16th, 2019

Time: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Ages: Families (ages 6+)

Join the Buffalo Zoo and Penn Dixie as we explore the world of dinosaurs. Compare our living collection with Penn Dixie’s not-so-living collection and learn about which prehistoric animals lived in Western New York and how they relate to our animals today.
